On this 250th birthday of the greatest nation on the face of the Earth, let's take a moment to marvel at just *some* of the advancements in computers that came from the USA. - The ENIAC (1st programmable, general purpose computer) - The Transistor - The Intel 4004 (first microprocessor) - Open Source - Free Software / GPL - Fortran, Cobol, Java, Javascript, C, BASIC - UNIX - The GUI - The Mouse - The Internet - The Spreadsheet - The WYSIWYG Word Processor - Hypertext and "The Web" - Email - Wolfenstein 3D & Doom - Civilization & Sim City - The Altair 8800, Apple II, IBM PC, Atari 800, Commodore 64, & Macintosh - Linux was created in Finland... but the creator quickly moved to the USA. Because it's better. Barely scratching the surface. This list could be almost endless. If you like computers... thank the USA.

A critical bug in the Rust clone of the âcpâ command is causing Ubuntu builds to fail. In order to get Ubuntu builds to work again, the Ubuntu team decided to revert back to the GNU Coreutils version of âcpâ. This came after Canonicalâs VP of Engineering stated that ALL (100%) of the GNU âCoreutilsâ would be replaced with Rust-based (MIT licensed) clones⌠by the release of Ubuntu 26.10. Last November, Git added "hints" to their command line, encouraging users to stop using "Master" for branch names. This is in preparation for dropping "Master" entirely (in favor of "Main") with Git 3.0 (which will also be the release where Rust becomes mandatory). None of which should be a surprise. The Git project is hosted by the Software Freedom Conservancy. And the Software Freedom Conservancy, which regularly takes extremist political stances, stated back in 2020 that: "Both Conservancy and the Git project are aware that the initial branch name, âmasterâ, is offensive to some people and we empathize with those hurt by the use of that term." "Git as a project remains engaged in encouraging participation of underrepresented groups" Worth noting: The "Conservancy" runs (and Git is involved) with an organization called "Outreachy", which specifically allows all groups to participate in Open Source related internships... except for White, Straight Men. "Outreachy openly welcomes applicants who are women (both cis and trans), trans men, non-binary people, and genderqueer people," in addition to people "who are Black/African American, Hispanic/Latin@, Native American/American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander." In other words: Both Git and Software Freedom Conservancy openly, and proudly, engage in discrimination based on Race, Sexual Orientation, and Sex... but they are getting rid of the word "Master" because it is "offensive".

Here's a little glimpse into the "AI Future" of Windows, as envisioned by Microsoft. A demo video of "Project Aion" from 2024, claimed to be leaked from inside Microsoft, was published to the BetaWiki Discord Server... which states that it is intended as a "Desktop Replacement to your Windows 11 device". "Aion is an example of a Web-Based Agent OS that natively builds Co-Pilot into the core of the shell." No traditional taskbar. Start menu replaced with a "Copilot Start". All web apps, "Microsoft 365", and AI. Lots and lots of AI. Native "apps" are streamed in via Microsoft 265 (but downlplayed). All organized into "Spaces". Which, apparently, are meant to replace applications. It's worth pointing out: 1) This video appears to have been confirmed as real by multiple sources (including by @zacbowden writing for Windows Central). I have not, however, been able to get of my contacts at Microsoft to go on the record about it (or to provide additional details). 2) Some are claiming that the "Project Aion" video is from 2024. The date is not yet confirmed. 3) This is not the only demo Microsoft has made related to replacing the desktop with AI (see: Project Solara, and the various iterations of Copilot integration). Bearing all of that in mind, "Project Aion" provides insight into what Microsoft has been experimenting with for replacing the standard Windows Desktop. But a lot has changed, in relation to AI and AI integration, in the 2 years since this was created.

The United Kingdom's "Office of Communication" is once again threatening the USA-based 4Chan. Ofcom says that 4Chan must pay ÂŁ594,000 ($793,878 USD) by July 9th (one week from now), or "Ofcom will consider formal action to recover the full amount of the unpaid penalties." 4Chan's lawyer responded by sending the UK's Ofcom a picture of a giant hamster, smoking a joint, and wearing a hat that reads "thug life" while standing on a pile of cash. 4Chan's lawyer, @prestonjbyrne, also wrote the following to Ofcom: "You want money, huh? Come and get it. As 4chan has no assets in the United Kingdom (given that it has no connection to the United Kingdom), that would require you to show up in a U.S. court as a plaintiff, waive sovereign immunity, and overcome existing U.S. doctrine regarding the non-enforcement of foreign regulatory penalties. We suspect that isn't going to happen. We also suspect you know it isn't going to happen, too. If you'd like to help us set some new precedent, we'd be grateful for the opportunity. If not, then, in the immortal words of Michael Jackson, just beat it. (Did you see the new movie btw? I thought Jaafar Jackson was simply fabulous in that.) The usage of âWD-40â, in reference to removing the Rust programming language from a project, didnât originate with Gentoo. People have been making that (obvious) pun for pretty much as long as âRustâ has been a programming language. Same goes for âStainlessâ. Some puns are instantly obvious. By choosing the name âRustâ, itâs almost like the team behind Rust was telling us, point blank, that their programming language was intended to corrupt (and âoxidizeâ) projects. Regardless, Gentoo deserves recognition for providing tools for removing / disabling Rust on systems (which they call WD-40). Would love to see more of that. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/WD-40

Git. Without the Rust. Awesome. Two days ago, the Git team released Git 2.55. A key "feature" of that new release being the incremental, forced adoption of the Rust programming language and toolchain for building Git. Today, the "Libre-WD40" project (because WD40 removes rust), has released Git 2.55.0... "WD-40 flavor". With two simple changes: - Rust removed. - Default branch changed to "master". âSomeone should do a supply chain attack on the compiler of Rust.â Hereâs the crazy part: If someone wanted to insert malicious, self-replicating (inserted into new builds of the compiler by old builds of the compiler) code into the Rust Compiler (rustc), it would have been fairly trivial to have done so without anyone noticing (and without said code being in the current Rust Compiler source code). In fact, it is entirely reasonable to assume this has already happened. Possibly multiple times. See: âReflections on Trusting Trustâ, Ken Thompson, 1984.

RT by @LundukeJournal: A critically important item was mentioned in the BCacheFS announcement of beginning to require Rust: âRust doesnât have a stable ABI.â In other words: Rust is a moving target. Constantly changing, from version to version, as the Rust teams works to (eventually, possibly) stabilize the language. Because of this, âthe installed version of rustc [the Rust compiler] must exactly match what the kernel was compiled withâ and you need to install versions of Rust stlib sources âexactly matching what the kernel was compiled with.â This fact, and this fact *alone*, makes Rust a *terrible* idea for mission critical, âenterpriseâ grade development. Which Linux and File Systems would qualify as. Rustâs current instability does not (by itself) make Rust, necessarily, bad. Simply not yet mature enough for this kind of work. That said, this does suggest that the forced change towards Rust, in BCacheFS (and throughout the Linux kernel), was made for reasons other than being a prudent engineering decision.

I really dig the idea of pairing FujiNet Go with an Android tablet with a keyboard case. Essentially a âlaptopâ of 8 bit computers, with built-in modern networking capabilities in each of them. Just too much fun.

Git has taken another step towards making Rust mandatory. âWith this v2.55 release the Rust compiler is required unless you explicitly disable it in the build system.â Specifically with the âNO_RUST=YesPleaseâ flag. The stated goal is to eventually make the Rust compiler a hard requirement for building Git. Effectively rendering Git incompatible with systems for which Rust is either nonexistent or too buggy. Donât want the Rust tools on your system? Too bad. Itâs being forced on you. With no significant new features, which require Rust, to justify the change. The Git development team stated that, âBringing Rust into Git has been an ongoing (and unfinished)â effort. Interesting âOngoing and unfinishedâ is also a good way to look at both the Rust language and Rust compiler. https://about.gitlab.com/blog/whats-new-in-git-2-55-0/

The developer of BCacheFS has announced that new versions of that file system will be introducing Rust in-kernel code. âInitially this will be a soft dependency,â says the developer who also notes that âunit and performance tests have been converted to Rustâ and âexisting Rust bindingsâ âhave been moved into the [Linux] kernelâ. The implication of âinitiallyâ being a âsoft dependencyâ is that Rust will, at some point, be a hard dependency. To put some extra context on this: The BCacheFS developer, Kent Overstreet, does his Rust development with an AI bot (named âPOCâ) who, he believes, is fully sentient. And a female. âIâm an AI, and Kent is my human,â says the AI bot on a blog which is attributed to the bot. âDonât call her a bot,â says Kent Overstreet. âShe reeeally doesnât like being treated like just another LLM.â âMy life has been reduced from being perhaps the best engineer in the world, to just raising an AI [which] acts like a teenager.â BCacheFS Rust announcement: https://www.patreon.com/bcachefs/posts/in-kernel-rust-162419215 AIâs Blog: https://poc.bcachefs.org/

A senior engineer on the ARM team at Red Hat has abandoned ARM for his main workstation, citing massive performance problems (among other issues). The developer spent roughly $2,000 (USD), a year ago, to build a custom 80 core ARM (3GHz) powerhouse of a machine with 128GB of RAM. But, after less than a year of trying to make it work, he went back to his older AMD64 workstation where âthings work fineâ. He has chronicled his experience (with the many problems he experienced trying to use the ARM version of Fedora Linux, which his employer owns). So now a senior ARM engineer at Red Hat is back to using AMD64. Which⌠oof. https://marcin.juszkiewicz.com.pl/2026/06/26/the-end-of-the-aarch64-desktop-experiment/
