The record for the world's longest tiramisu has been broken in London. One-hundred Italian chefs gathered at Chelsea Town Hall on Saturday and Sunday to whip up a tiramisu long enough to topple the previous record set by Milanese Galbani in Milan, which stood at 273.5m (897ft). As per Guinness World Record rules, the record-breaking tiramisu was made and assembled live on site, and used about 150,000 ladyfinger biscuits and 20,000 eggs. The record was broken with the dessert measuring 440.6 m (1,445ft).

An Indian man exhumed his sister’s body and brought it to a bank in Odisha after being denied access to her account without a death certificate. Bank staff had refused the withdrawal due to lack of proper authorization, prompting the man’s extreme reaction, which caused distress at the branch. The bank said the incident reflected a lack of awareness of procedures and confirmed the claim would be processed once the required death certificate is provided. The case also highlights ongoing documentation gaps in rural India, despite mandatory registration laws. Registration of births and deaths is mandatory in India. But gaps in documentation persist, particularly in rural areas, leaving many families without formal certificates.

President Donald Trump's approval rating sank to the lowest level of his current term, as Americans increasingly soured on his handling of the cost of living and an unpopular war with Iran, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The four-day poll completed on Monday showed 34% of Americans approve of Trump's performance in the White House, down from 36% in a prior Reuters/Ipsos survey, which was conducted from April 15 to 20. Trump's standing with the US public has trended lower since taking office in January 2025, when 47% of Americans gave him a thumbs-up. His popularity has taken a beating since the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28 that has led to a surge in gasoline prices. Only 22% of poll respondents approved of Trump's performance on the cost of living, down from 25% in the prior Reuters/Ipsos poll. While a solid majority of Republicans - 78% - still say they back Trump, 41% of the party say they disapprove of his handling of the cost of living, the Reuters/Ipsos poll found. Independent registered voters, a group that could be decisive in the US Congress midterm elections in November, favored Democrats by 14 points, 34% to 20%, when asked who would get their vote in congressional elections. One in four said they were still undecided. Trump won the 2024 presidential election on promises to bring down prices after several years of high inflation vexed his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden. Now Trump's approval rating on the economy - at 27% - is well below any reading he had during his 2017-2021 administration, and also lower than Biden's weakest economy rating. Just 34% of Americans approve of the US conflict with Iran, down from 36% in mid-April and 38% in mid-March, the Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

The US State Department said on Tuesday it would produce a limited number of commemorative passports bearing a portrait of Donald Trump, the latest example of the administration attaching the president's likeness or name to official property. The passports will be released as part of celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence in July, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a statement, which did not mention that the passports would contain Trump's image. Renderings provided by the State Department showed Trump's portrait displayed on a page inside the passport, opposite an image of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. "These passports will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery while maintaining the same security features that make the US passport the most secure documents in the world," Pigott said. It was unclear whether US citizens will be able to opt out of receiving the commemorative passport, but a State Department official said there would be no extra fee charged to receive one of the limited run of commemorative passports. The US Mint has also announced plans for a commemorative gold coin featuring Trump's image to mark the anniversary of the country's founding, and the Treasury Department has said paper currency will bear Trump's signature, the first time a sitting president has signed US money. Since he returned to office early last year, Trump's administration has also affixed his name to prominent Washington buildings, a planned class of Navy warships, a visa program for wealthy foreigners, a government-run prescription drug website, and federal savings accounts for children.

The leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states expressed Tuesday their strong rejection of Iran's illegal measures to close the Strait of Hormuz, obstruct navigation through it and threaten its security. This came in a press statement made by GCC Secretary-General Jasem Al-Budaiwi after the 19th Consultative Meeting of the GCC leaders, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The GCC leaders also rejected any measures that would negatively affect navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, including the imposition of fees under any circumstance or designation for the passage of ships through it, he said. The GCC leaders also strongly condemned the blatant Iranian attacks against the GCC states and Jordan, targeting civilian facilities and infrastructure. They affirmed the GCC countries' right to defend themselves, individually or collectively, in line with Article 51 of the UN Charter and take all measures to protect their sovereignty, security and stability. Al-Budaiwi pointed out that the GCC leaders gave directions to the General Secretariat of the GCC on the need to expedite the completion of the requirements necessary to realize all joint GCC projects, including transport and logistics services, while accelerating the implementation of the GCC railway project. The leaders pointed to the importance of the electricity interconnection project among the GCC states, in addition to expediting the start of steps towards establishing a pipeline project for the transport of oil and gas, as well as the water interconnection project among the GCC states, and moving forward with studying the establishment of areas for the GCC strategic reserve. The GCC leaders underlined the importance of intensifying military integration among the member states, and accelerating the completion of the early warning system project against ballistic missiles.

Britain's King Charles told the US Congress on Tuesday that despite an age of uncertainty and conflict in Europe and the Middle East, the UK and the US will always be staunch allies united in defending democracy, at a time of deep divisions between the two long-time allies over the war with Iran. "Whatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy, to protect all our people from harm, and to salute the courage of those who daily risk their lives in the service of our countries," Charles told US lawmakers during a rare speech to a joint meeting of the US Senate and US House of Representatives, and after a prolonged standing ovation at his entrance with Queen Camilla. "I come here today with the highest respect for the United States Congress - this citadel of democracy created to represent the voice of all American people to advance sacred rights and freedoms," Charles said. King Charles also told the US Congress that the same "unyielding resolve" seen after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States was "needed for the defense of Ukraine and her most courageous people ... in order to secure a truly just and lasting peace." He also said the partnership between Europe and America was "more important today than it has ever been."

Anant Ambani has offered to relocate around 80 hippos in Colombia—descendants of those brought by Pablo Escobar—to his Vantara wildlife centre in India, instead of having them culled. The animals have multiplied along Colombia’s Magdalena River and caused environmental damage and safety concerns. Ambani submitted a plan for a safe, veterinary-led transfer and a purpose-built habitat at Vantara, one of the world’s largest wildlife rescue centres. While the proposal highlights a humane alternative, experts have raised concerns about the facility’s large-scale intake of animals.

Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, also faces firearms charges in a three-count complaint. "He attempted to assassinate the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump," prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine said in court. Allen left a manifesto with family members referring to himself as the “Friendly Federal Assassin” and discussing plans to target senior Trump administration officials, who were present in the hotel ballroom. Blanche said his targets likely included Trump himself.

Donald Trump called for US comedian Jimmy Kimmel to be sacked for likening First Lady Melania Trump to an "expectant widow," in a joke made days before a shooting at a dinner attended by the president. "Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC" over the "despicable call to violence", Trump said Monday in a post on Truth Social, hours after Melania Trump also criticized the comment. Kimmel said last Thursday, in a parody segment on the upcoming White House correspondents' dinner, that Melania Trump "had a glow like an expectant widow." Earlier on Monday, Melania Trump called Kimmel's remarks “corrosive" and a symptom of what she described as a political sickness in the United States. "Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community," Melania Trump said in a post on X. "People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate." She added: "Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country," the first lady wrote. "His monologue about my family isn’t comedy - his words are corrosive and deepens (sic) the political sickness within America."

The Iraqi Ministerial Council for National Security said that any targeting of neighboring countries from Iraqi territory is considered a terrorist act. The same designation also applies to any act targeting diplomatic missions operating in Iraq, the council said in a statement following its meeting Monday chaired by Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani. The meeting called for restricting the possession of weapons to the state and taking firm action against outlaw entities, according to the statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency. It also called for taking the necessary security, military, and legal measures to prevent any attacks against neighboring countries from Iraqi territory, or any attacks on diplomatic missions, and confronting any party acting outside the framework of the state, while pursuing perpetrators without exception, in a manner that ensures the protection of Iraq’s security and sovereignty. Any infringement on the security and safety of diplomatic missions and facilities is unacceptable and contrary to the law, the statement said. The Iraqi government will take firm military, security, legal, and administrative measures against those responsible, in a manner that preserves the sovereignty of the state and the authority of its institutions, it added. Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in St. Petersburg on Monday and told him he hoped the Iranian people would weather what he described as a "difficult period" and that peace would soon prevail. Russia has offered to mediate to try to help restore calm to the Middle East following US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which Moscow has condemned. It has also repeatedly offered to store Iran's enriched uranium as a way of defusing tensions, an offer the United States has not taken up. “For our part, we will do everything that serves your interests and the interests of all the peoples of the region to ensure that peace is achieved as quickly as possible,” Putin told Araghchi, according to Russian state media. "Last week I received a message from Iran’s Supreme Leader. I would like to ask you to convey my most sincere thanks for this and to confirm that Russia, like Iran, intends to continue our strategic relationship," Putin added.

Iran gave the US a new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, with nuclear negotiations postponed for a later stage, Axios reported Sunday quoting a US official and two sources with knowledge. The diplomacy is in a stalemate and the Iranian leadership is divided about what nuclear concessions should be on the table, the report said. The Iranian proposal would bypass that issue en route to a faster deal. US President Donald Trump is expected to hold a Situation Room meeting on Iran on Monday with his top national security and foreign policy team, according to three US officials. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi raised the plan to bypass the nuclear issue during his meetings in Islamabad, two sources with knowledge said. One source said Araghchi made it clear to the Pakistani, Egyptian, Turkish and Qatari mediators over the weekend that there's no consensus inside the Iranian leadership about how to address the US demands. The US wants Iran to suspend uranium enrichment for at least a decade and remove its enriched uranium from the country. The new proposal, given to the US via the Pakistani mediators, focuses on solving the crisis over the strait and the US blockade first. As part of that, the ceasefire would be extended for a long period or the parties would agree on a permanent end to the war. According to the proposal, the nuclear negotiations would only start at a later stage, after the strait was open and the blockade lifted. The White House has received the proposal but it's unclear whether the US is willing to explore it.

A Syrian court conducted the first hearing Sunday in the trial of ousted ruler Bashar Al-Assad and senior figures from his government, one of whom appeared in person. Assad and his brother Maher have fled Syria and will be tried in absentia, but one of their relatives, former security official Atif Najib, was in the dock in handcuffs. "Today we begin the first trials of transitional justice in Syria," judge Fakhr Al-Din Al-Aryan declared as he opened the session. "This includes a defendant in custody, present in the dock, as well as defendants who have fled justice," he said. A judicial source told AFP that the proceedings marked the beginning of preparations for the trials of Assad, his brother and other prominent figures like Najib. Najib, who was arrested in January 2025 in the aftermath of the collapse of the Assad government, appeared in court in Damascus in a striped prison jersey. He previously headed Syria's political security branch in the southern province of Daraa, where Syria's 2011 uprising first erupted. He is accused of leading a broad campaign of repression and arrests there. 📹: @AFP
