R to @IISS_org: Crypto obtained through illicit activity is converted via over-the-counter (OTC) desks, peer-to-peer (P2P) brokers and high-risk exchanges. To obscure the source of illicit revenue, mixers and bridges are used to blend or reroute value. Sanctioned-state activity and individual-level fraud converge on shared conversion nodes, where illicit proceeds are recycled into drug and arms supply chains via high-risk exchanges. Converted assets are then directed to their intended recipients. Explore the latest #ChartingCyberspace analysis by @JuliaVoo and Dara Eoy: https://bit.ly/4cpxvYv

Cryptocurrency’s capacity for reuse and conversion facilitates large-scale cross-border operations by transnational criminal, terrorist and state-linked actors. Illicit proceeds are generated through activities such as crypto theft, extortion, laundering, sanctions evasion, scams, fraud and terror financing. These funds converge on a small number of recurring conversion nodes, where they are converted into assets that are more difficult to trace and seize. 2026 could be the year when Japan begins deployment of the first in a range of domestically developed very-high-speed, low-observable missiles as part of Tokyo’s ‘counterstrike’ strategy, supported by parallel efforts to expand space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) to enable long-range targeting. These stand-off weapons are intended to bolster deterrence amid a worsening regional security environment by enabling Japan to strike adversary forces at greater ranges. 🇫🇷 As President Macron sets out an updated vision for France’s nuclear strategy – including an increase in warheads, deeper coordination with European allies and a clearer European dimension to French deterrence – this episode of the ACP podcast offers essential context. In this episode, @alexbollfrass speaks with Héloïse Fayet, Emmanuelle Maitre and Dr Liviu Horovitz about the history and trajectory of France’s nuclear arsenal and what makes Paris’ approach distinct. Unlike the UK, France built a fully independent nuclear force, developing its own warheads and delivery systems and maintaining strategic ambiguity around its red lines. A timely deep dive into the doctrine behind today’s headlines. 🎧 Listen here: https://go.iiss.org/4kZvvs0
