Between July 29 and August 1, someone cut down all eight Flock Safety Falcon cameras in Winona, Minnesota, leaving the city’s entire license plate surveillance network offline, according to KIMT News. The severed poles were found abandoned in nearby weeds, but the cameras themselves were gone, pushing the state’s surveillance debate into apparent sabotage. POV: Rolling through the work week. Meet Beni, the all-terrain camera robot from Mondo Robotics designed to be your autonomous, hands-free filmer. Built to handle unpredictable outdoor environments, Beni can track subjects at speeds up to 18 mph while using AI to keep the shot framed in 4K. But what happens when the terrain fights back? Beni is equipped with an armored shell and a self-recovery system. If it takes a tumble down a hill, drops down a set of stairs, or tips over on rough ground, it can autonomously right itself and keep rolling. DuckDuckGo has teamed up with eyewear brand Knockaround to launch what they are dubbing "the world's most innovative anti-surveillance sunglasses". The twist? They are just normal sunglasses. Priced at $35, the matte black Paso Robles frames feature zero cameras, zero microphones, and absolutely no AI or electronics. The tongue-in-cheek marketing campaign acts as a direct, satirical protest against the rise of smart wearables, specifically taking aim at devices like Meta's $299 Ray-Ban smart glasses. Recent controversies over covert public filming and data collection have earned camera-equipped wearables the nickname "pervert glasses" online. A video out of Cudahy, Wisconsin, is reigniting the debate over mass surveillance in everyday spaces. While pulling into the Eagle Sports Range, a visitor noticed something unusual: 4 Flock cameras pointing directly into the business's parking lot entrance and scanning every customer rather than monitoring the public street. "I'm sure there's no ulterior motive behind this either," she remarked in the clip. While Flock is heavily marketed as a public safety tool to deter crime, the technology is facing intense national backlash. Privacy advocates, including the ACLU, warn that ALPR networks create vast, searchable databases of innocent citizens' movements, logging exactly where people go and when. Would you care if Flock cameras tracked and logged your visits to private businesses? Let us know your thoughts below.

Opposition to data centers is pushing a surprisingly broad group of Americans, from farmers and teachers to parents and younger activists, to risk arrest. At least 37 protest-related arrests were recorded in the US in 2026, along with 12 cases in which police intervened to prevent protesters from confronting local officials, according to Futurism. The protests are largely peaceful and driven by frustration that elected leaders are prioritizing major tech companies over residents’ concerns. Yet some people have been arrested for minor violations at public meetings, including refusing to identify themselves, exceeding speaking limits, or even clapping in support of an anti-data-center speaker. For example, Kansas physics teacher Lux Claridge was arrested after clapping in support of an anti-data-center speaker at a public meeting. New research estimates that ICE added DNA profiles from nearly 1 million people to the national criminal database in one year, even though immigration violations are generally civil matters. ICE now collects DNA after nearly any arrest, including from asylum seekers and some refugees, making DHS the largest source of new profiles in the FBI’s CODIS database. DHS policy sets the minimum age at 14, yet Georgetown and WIRED found that CBP sent the DNA of 492 younger children, including four-year-olds, to the FBI. Families received little explanation about why it was collected or how it would be used. Refusing collection can lead to federal prosecution, while detainees often receive little explanation about how their genetic data will be used. Critics argue the program treats people in civil immigration proceedings like future criminal suspects, collecting sensitive data without meaningful consent or clear accountability. European privacy regulators are intensifying scrutiny of Meta and other smart glasses makers over devices capable of discreetly recording audio and video. Germany’s Hamburg data protection commissioner has warned that such glasses could be classified as hidden cameras, while the European Data Protection Board is preparing a report expected by the end of summer. Regulators are examining Meta’s recording lights and use of captured data for AI training, warning that smart glasses can collect information without bystanders realizing it.
