As noted below, #Tehran has expanded its threat to strike in response to Israeli attacks on #Beirut to include Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon. No country can accept this “protection racket” - even #Lebanon itself has said it rejects Iran’s interference in its country and doesn’t want its “help” in solving the #Hezbollah-Israel conflict, which Beirut is addressing through diplomacy with Israel. It was a close call but the bottom line of the last 24 hours has been to repel Iran’s effort to bring Lebanon under its strategic umbrella, including in its talks with the USG. Iran, however, will persist in this effort since #Hezbollah is such a major IRGC operation and Lebanon is the one theater where the IRGC is still attacking/killing Israelis, key to the waning legitimacy of the cracking Islamic regime. Preventing this and maintaining the separation of the two tracks - Israel/Lebanon and U.S./Iran - is a top policy priority.
