Masumura17 sensei is, as always, very insightful. Their interview with Zach, which touched on both their then-recently translated Children of Mu-Town, as well as the various aspects of being a more underground manga creator in Japan, is well worth a watch ā€¦

When I interviewed Masumura-san, something he said that always stuck with me was "...the unappeasable demand for manga from the readership becomes a factor...pushing for that supply causes creators to push themselves harder or work in very unbearable conditions."

The most egregious part of excusing AI as a cost cutting measure is manga publishers donā€™t pay translators, letterers, etc a living wage anyway. The manga you love is produced by freelancers who simply love it. Itā€™s fuck 7S for me, Iā€™m afraid.
