OPEC Secretary General, HE Haitham Al Ghais, welcomed today HE Mikhail Ulyanov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation, at the OPEC Secretariat.
The discussions focused on the importance of continued efforts to support oil market stability for the benefit of both producers and consumers as well as the wider global economy.
HE Al Ghais highlighted the value of the strong and constructive relationship between OPEC and the Russian Federation since 2016 and expressed his appreciation for Russia’s ongoing commitment to the collective efforts aimed at safeguarding balanced oil markets amid evolving global dynamics.
The Russian Federation remains a key partner in the Declaration of Cooperation since its inception in 2016, playing a leading role in promoting dialogue, transparency, and collective action among participating countries.

The Arab Republic of Egypt is an energy powerhouse on the African continent, a historical supporter of OPEC and host to crucial milestones in the global oil industry. This includes the First Arab Petroleum Congress, held in Cairo in 1959, where #OPEC’s five Founding Fathers first met in the Yacht Club in Al-Maadi, Cairo and laid the groundwork that led to the inception of the Organization a year later in Baghdad.

Themed “Beyond Boundaries: Imagine. Discover. Make a Difference,” the fair brought together students from high schools across Austria and Central Europe to share creative ideas and innovative science and engineering projects.

The OPEC Second Legal Workshop for Young Lawyers concluded today, after three days of engaging lectures and discussions. Topics covered included the role of OPEC in the global energy discussion, the importance of international instruments in shaping energy institutions and the role of lawyers in the energy sector.
HE Haitham Al Ghais met with the participants in the final session to convey his appreciation for their participation and exchange views on the topics discussed.
During these three days, the participants had the opportunity to share their experiences and views, discuss them with invited experts and establish links that will facilitate further professional development and exchange in the mid- and long-term.

The 9th International Conference on Risk Management in Energy, organized by Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation and the Institute for Energy and Finance, took place on 22 April 2026, via videoconference.
On behalf of the OPEC Secretariat, Dr. Ayed Al-Qahtani, Director of the Research Division at OPEC, participated in the strategic session on “Risks and opportunities of low-carbon economy for energy industries”.
Dr. Al-Qahtani shared OPEC’s perspective on global energy market dynamics and outlooks and highlighted that global primary energy demand is to increase by 23% by 2050, with oil retaining the largest share of the energy mix in the long term at almost 30%.
Dr. Al-Qahtani also shared that the pursuit of lower emissions is vital, however, debates need to be balanced and realistic about the need for all sources of energy to meet increasing energy demand. Moreover, a pragmatic approach and global cooperation will be needed to ensure energy security, stability, sustainability and affordability for all.

This workshop is to prepare the next generation of legal professionals who will represent the rights of #OPEC member countries in various international fora in an increasingly complex and interconnected legal environment.
