Over the past number of days, I have spoken with many families whose loved ones are in the Middle East. I am in ongoing contact with the Irish and British governments and I am working to support our citizens in the region. This war is reckless and irresponsible. Further escalation, including the involvement of the British government, reflects a dangerous disregard for international law. I will not be part of any briefing by the British government on their military operations. My priority is the safety and wellbeing of our citizens. Sinn Féin MEPs in Europe have secured support for including PeacePlus funding in the draft EU budget, after it was initially left out of proposals. This European funding, worth over €230 million in the last budget, continues to make a real difference in people’s lives here. It has invested in youth and employment programmes, built community facilities, supported local businesses, and funded many other initiatives. I will continue to work with the Sinn Féin team in the European Parliament, the Assembly, and in the Dáil to protect this vital funding.

Sinn Féin is bringing forward a bill to put more money in workers’ pockets, strengthen rights at work, support families, and empower trade unions. Our Good Jobs Bill will be the most progressive workers’ rights legislation the north has ever seen. Today, I joined Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald and Declan Kearney MLA in meeting with trade unions to continue driving this important work forward. Today is a positive day for local tourism, with an additional £2.3m being invested in over a dozen projects as part of the Shared Island Fund. This funding will enhance attractions right across the island, including the Derry Girls Museum, The Gobbins Walk, the Free Derry Museum, the Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills Courthouse. It will help to further showcase our natural beauty, rich culture, and the very best of our people.

I have taken the decision not to attend this year’s St. Patrick’s Day events at the White House due to the situation in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. I deeply value the historic relationship between Ireland and the United States, and I remain committed to working with U.S. figures to strengthen our peace and grow our economy. However, despite the hopes and promise offered by the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, horrific Israeli military attacks continue. I cannot and will not look away from systematic human rights abuses and flagrant breaches of international law by Israel. It is my responsibility as a political leader to stand firmly on the side of humanity.
