Minister of Works, David Umahi, has launched a dedicated security unit called the Coastal Highway Guards to protect the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, starting with 40 deployed officers. Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, shared a video of the launch on his X account, sharing that the unit will be led by retired General Adekunle Shodunke and will work alongside existing state security agencies. Speaking at the launch, Umahi said, "Their presence on the highway is to reassure motorists, not frighten them. Their responsibility will include, among other things, maintaining presence along the designated sections of the highway and maintaining alert to activities capable of threatening the safety of road users or government infrastructure. They are expected to observe, remain vigilant, identify hazards, monitor government infrastructure, report vandalism and suspicious activities, assist motorists appropriately, report incidents and emergencies, communicate accurately, maintain proper records, and support authorized security and emergency agencies. They will protect the integrity of their assigned areas. They are the eyes and ears of the highway, and they will observe any damage to the infrastructure and report it to the appropriate authorities. We have motorcycles that they will be using to patrol the entire coastal area for now. To our host community, I want to appeal to you to please regard these personnel as partners." EFCC has defended its decision to freeze the bank accounts of the Osun State government, saying the move was necessary to prevent the looting of public funds ahead of a governorship election in the state. In a public statement, the EFCC said it had been investigating the Osun State government since March 2026 over the alleged fraudulent management of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds, and Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursements, with the total amount under scrutiny put at N11 billion. The commission added that the state's Accountant General was among the officials who had already appeared before its investigators. EFCC said the ongoing investigation alone would not have led to the account freeze, but that unusual fund movements changed its calculation. According to the EFCC, large transfers from the state's accounts into various corporate entities began on August 2, 2026, prompting it to act quickly by placing a Post No Debit order on the affected accounts.
