"We live and work to serve the people of Northern Ireland, and I would love to know how the minister thinks this specific trip did anything but divide people here" @CaraHunterMLA hits the nail on the head re Education Minister Paul Givan's visit to an illegal Israel settlement.

I'm in NYC during the Mayoral election, voters can cast their ballot by mail or vote up to 7 days early. Standard democratic processes used in many EU countries aimed at making it easier to vote. Ireland has an outdated, rigid voting system. My view ⬇️ https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/ireland-voting-electoral-system-outdated-turnout-low-emma-de-souza-6860502-Oct2025/

Morning NYC. A day of back-to-back meetings before flying to upstate New York to deliver a series of guest talks tomorrow. Then it's 20 hours in DC, before travelling back to New York City. Not missing much at home, am I?

The UUP statement that the party won't be supporting the no confidence motion in Pail Givan couldn't be any weaker. A throwaway reference to Gaza whilst using heavy language re Oct 7. Meanwhile the DUP statements are pure student politics. The juvenile language is embarrassing.

R to @EmmaCDeSouza: These measures are all intended to make it easier for citizens to participate in the democratic process, while Ireland places outdated barriers on participation that suppress the turnout. Who benefits from Ireland's restricted voting system?

R to @EmmaCDeSouza: Estonia introduced internet voting in 2005. Denmark, Sweden, Latvia, Finland, & several other European Union countries offer advance voting. Austria, Belgium, & Germany all lowered the voting age to 16. Postal ballots are available to all citizens & votes for citizens abroad.

My latest: By contrast to many of our European neighbours, Ireland has a weak democracy, vulnerable to external interference with low levels of trust in political institutions & high levels of voter apathy. The electoral system has been frozen in time. https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/ireland-voting-electoral-system-outdated-turnout-low-emma-de-souza-6860502-Oct2025

R to @EmmaCDeSouza: This year's charity spotlight was Cope Galway, who spoke powerfully on the issue of childhood homelessness and really hit home the importance of sustained funding for vital services such as theirs.

A lovely afternoon of thoughtful discussion on peace processes, civil society, & the future of Ireland at Illinois State. The final question was whether I believed a positive peace was possible in NI without Irish Unity - reunification is how we advance peace & reconciliation.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but Heather Humphreys didn't lose the presidential election because she was a protestant. It wasn't sectarianism. She lost for running a smear campaign against the other candidate, for being the government's candidate, and for her policies.
