I know this is hard for many to understand but an oil price shock to the upside is ultimately deflationary at this point of the credit cycle. Oil peaked in June of 2008 after a very fast rise and headline inflation was accelerating until it wasn’t. If oil stays above $80 for any length of time it will be a death blow for an already struggling consumer. It’s always about the speed of the price change.

Private Credit: In the housing crisis of 2008 even though there was a lot of fraud, underlying the loans was a homogenous piece of collateral called a home. As the private credit market undergoes its correction the price discovery will be much harder as the underlying collateral is not homogenous. Expect the bid ask spreads to be immense and markdowns to be larger if this gets out of hand.

Then on March 10, 2020, someone got to him and flattered his capacity to perform miracles with state force. He got out of front of what he was told was coming anyway: lockdowns.
