Very well paying job. We were living the dream. Until Vioxx turned it into a nightmare. That whole week, my husband kept complaining about his shoulder pain. Heā€™d been prescribed Vioxx for that pain. He was a strong man. So even though it could have been a warning sign, he did what the doctor recommended and kept taking the medication. The morning of his motherā€™s birthday party, we got all dressed up and headed over to their house. His brother was an ER doctor so I was hoping he could look after him at the party. When we got there, heā€™d been called away to the hospital. About an hour into the party, my husband Mike started grabbing his chest and he finally let me take him to the ER. I nearly killed us getting there. An ambulance would have taken too long and they couldnā€™t really maneuver the pathway to the house because my in-laws lived on a farm. So I had no choice but to drive. Despite all the challenges, we made it to the hospital and my husband walked in. I parked the car and walked in to find him still standing at the desk. I screamed at the triage nurse to get off her fuckin ass because my husband was having a heart attack. I had my husband sit until a different nurse came out and asked him some questions. When they finally got him back, I knew he was going to die. He was scared. He squeezed my hand so tightly and Iā€™d never seen him that pale. 15 minutes after arriving at the hospital, he started seizing. It got crazy. His rolled to one side and I asked the nurse if he was OK? He yelled out, ā€œI NEED SOME HELP IN HERE!ā€ Just like something you see on a tv show. I knew what that meant so I fainted. They sat me in a chair and revived me and started shouting out questions regarding his health and medication use. I was too distraught to be helpful in any way. But that wasnā€™t even the half of it. When the paddles came out and they cut his shirt off, I was still holding it together a little bit. But when they rolled him over and mouthful of his blood splattered onto the floor, I was completely terror stricken. I let out a screeching wail that came straight out of a horror movie. I started shouting, ā€œI love you, please donā€™t go!ā€ Then I started begging the team to save him. At that point the doctor yelled at the nurse to get me out and they swung the curtain shut. I walked around the hospital by myself for what felt like an hour. I was crying so hard I couldnā€™t even see anymore. I covered in blood. I was only 26 years old. By the time they let me see him, the hospital room looked like a gunshot victim had been treated there. His hands were cold and stiff. He was covered in blood. Blood poured out of every orifice. His face was purple. His eyes were bulging with petechiae. It looked like heā€™d been strangled. The image will haunt me forever. I snatched his wedding ring off and kissed his forehead. I told him some secrets. And walked out. My husband walked into the hospital and was dead 20 minutes later. Now multiply that by thousands. The pharmaceutical companies executives should have gone to prison. Instead they got nice bloated salaries and bonuses. There was no justice for my husband or his children.
