RT by @DefenceGeek: SITUATION UPDATE: What we know about the drone in Romania 🇷🇴 This morning, 24 August, an unidentified drone entered Moldovan airspace from the direction of Ukraine, during Russia’s overnight attacks on Ukrainian targets in the Odesa region. At 05:55, Moldovan authorities detected the drone coming from the direction of Vinogradovka, Odesa region, flying toward Vulcănești. At 06:09, it left Moldovan airspace from the Cahul area and crossed into Romania near Vlădești, Galați County. From there, the drone continued into Galați County, with the last known activity around the Târgu Bujor–Matca/Tecuci area. During its route, it passed over multiple populated areas, with local residents reporting the sound and sight of a drone overhead. Based on the reported trajectory, the drone appears to have travelled more than 170 km from the reported entry point near Vinogradovka, across Moldova and into Romania. Romania responded by scrambling two F-16s from Borcea Air Base and an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter. A RO-Alert was issued at 06:12, warning people in the affected area. The situation continued for almost three hours. The two F-16s eventually returned to Borcea, while the helicopter continued searching the Târgu Bujor–Matca area. The Romanian Ministry of Defence later confirmed that, despite the search, no impact marks, drone fragments or other evidence of a crash had been found. The air alert was finally ended at 08:52. There were reports of a possible crash in the Furceni area, but this has not been confirmed by the Ministry of Defence. Additionally, according to multiple reports, the drone was only successfully tracked during the initial phase of its flight. After that, authorities appear to have lost a clear track of its location. This makes it very likely that the drone eventually crashed somewhere on Romanian territory, but where exactly and what happened to it remains unknown.

Metrea, the private contractor who now operates a fleet of KC-135R and one C-135FR, bought 14x C-135FR/KC-135RG from the French Air and Space Force (FASF) back in 2024. 11x C-135FR were transferred (not all were delivered) to Metrea at the time of the signing, with 3x KC-135RG to be transferred at a later date. This airframe, like a number of those 11x, was still parked in France as of last week. The aircraft will likely undergo a maintenance period and be equipped with additional systems before being added to the service of Metrea. In addition to the airframes bought from FASF, Metrea also bought 4x KC-135R from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) back in 2020 and have been operating them since. #AA4DC1- N763MA - SWB63

Romania detected a maritime drone near the Neptun Deep project and scrambled an F-16, which engaged the drone with its onboard cannon. The drone was hit and damaged, but not completely destroyed, and continued drifting in the sea. A Romanian Coast Guard vessel then arrived in the area. When the crew located the damaged drone, they initially believed they had discovered a second drone. They hadn’t. It was the exact same drone that had already been engaged by the F-16, still drifting in the water after surviving the initial attack. Romanian EOD personnel subsequently destroyed it completely.

The drone was detected in Romania’s exclusive economic zone, around 80 miles east of Constanța, close to the offshore infrastructure where several hundred people were working. For the first time in this incident, two Romanian F-16s were scrambled with orders to fire. One of the F-16s used its onboard cannon to destroy the drone safely. Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruță says the drone was loaded with explosives and that Ukraine officially confirmed through a newly established communication channel that it was not Ukrainian. A Romanian military command cell coordinated the response, with NATO involved at the command level This is particularly significant because Neptun Deep is critical energy infrastructure and Romania expects the project to become a major source of gas once production begins. And this is not happening in isolation. Earlier this month, Romanian forces also destroyed two Gerbera-type drones found drifting near the same offshore project
