The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), with its international development partners, has taken a proactive and anticipatory approach to confront current global challenges, which threaten livelihoods and development in the Region. Appearing recently on the Quick Wins segment of the Social Protection Podcast, Programme Manager, Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Development at the CARICOM Secretariat, Shaun Baugh, highlighted the steps the Region is taking to ensure food security, managing drought, fluctuating energy prices and supply chain disruptions in the face of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the projected impact of El Nino, referred to as ‘Super El Nino’, and other global and climate shocks. “We in the Region have what is called a 25 x 25 + 5 food security plan. And what it really seeks to do is to improve our food and nutrition security status. One, trying to reduce our reliance on imports and to improve and transform our food systems. So, what the Region, through our Heads of Government, has done, we have developed what is called a regional response framework or matrix. In other words, it has mapped all the potential scenarios and impacts to be generated from these two conflicts, and we have come up with long-term and short-term as well as medium-term solutions,” Mr. Baugh said during the segment. *70+ technical sessions to drive milestone 20th Caribbean Week of Agriculture in Jamaica* The Caribbean’s agriculture sector is set for one of its biggest regional gatherings in years, with more than 70 technical sessions, networking opportunities and a major exhibition and trade show planned for the 20th Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) in Jamaica from 27 September to 2 October 2026. Since the launch of the CWA 2026 in May, the programme has evolved into five days of activities being organised by the CARICOM Secretariat, the Government of Jamaica, regional partners and other stakeholders. The event will be held in the parish of Trelawny, with activities starting on Sunday, 27 September, with field trips. The opening ceremony will take place that afternoon at the Ocean Coral Springs Resort. Under the theme ‘The New F.A.C.E of Caribbean Food Systems’, the technical sessions will focus on transforming the Region’s food systems and accelerating Vision 25 x 25 + 5 with discussions covering topics such as nutrition-smart and real food solutions; food as medicine; repositioning the root and tuber industry; competitive root crop research; fisheries and aquaculture; biogas and organic fertiliser; hydroponic fodder systems; financing agriculture and mobilising private capital; ruminant production resilience; women-led agri-business; and food security and cultural identity. Technology-focused sessions will examine digital agriculture, including digital extension, and digital trade layer; applied artificial intelligence and citizen science; climate resilience and climate-smart technology. Youth perspectives will feature prominently through a panel discussion, and in sessions including AgriYouth Rising – Cultivating the New F.A.C.E of Caribbean Agriculture; youth e-agriculture; and youth agricultural land access policy. Several ministerial forums, including a special meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development on Agriculture, will be held during the week. The 20th CWA is supported by regional and international partners, including the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute, Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism, CARICOM Private Sector Organisation, Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency; Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations World Food Programme, The University of the West Indies, and the Agriculture Alliance of the Caribbean. As Guyana 🇬🇾 prepares to host the 16th edition of the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) in 2027, representatives of the #CARICOM Secretariat held discussions with the country’s Ministers who hold responsibility for culture. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Charles S. Ramson, and Minister within that Ministry, Hon. Steven Jacobs, visited the CARICOM Secretariat for talks with a team headed by Adviser, Social Development, Beverly Harry-Emmanuel. Programme Manager, Culture at the CARICOM Secretariat, Dr. Hilary Brown presented on the background and evolution of CARIFESTA, which formed the basis of discussions on elements of the Region’s roving multidisciplinary, mega festival. Its wide range of events; financial, administrative, logistical and marketing components; and opportunities for creative industry development were among the agenda items. The inaugural CARIFESTA was held in 1972 in Guyana, which also hosted the festival in 2008. CARIFESTA XV was last held in Barbados in 2025. The teams also discussed regional youth development following an overview by Programme Manager, Youth Development, Michele Small-Bartley.
