While people are understandably concerned and angry, there can be no justification for criminality, disorder or the destruction of property. Violence and destruction are not the answer. It is wrong, diverts much-needed resources, creates fear and uncertainty, and leaves local communities to deal with the consequences. Those responsible should stop immediately.

My thoughts remain with the victim, his family & the local residents who witnessed such traumatic & distressing scenes. The courage & quick actions of local people & the police who intervened to disarm the attacker undoubtedly prevented further harm & deserve the highest praise. I was on the ground today speaking with local people & will continue to engage closely with the community & the PSNI as the investigation progresses. We must allow justice to take its course & ensure the perpetrator faces the full weight of the law.
