The Ulster Unionist Party has today formally commenced its leadership transition process. ā€œTo ensure a smooth and orderly transition, Mike Nesbitt MLA will continue in his role until the party convenes an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Saturday 31 January 2026 at the Stormont Hotel, Belfast.ā€ Formal nominations for both deputy leader and leader are now open and will close on 15 January 2026.

I was on @BBCgmu this morning with my old friend @JohnMcCallister discussing UUP. John was the other candidate in the 2012 contest (with @mikenesbittni), the last contest the party had, even with four other leaders since then. I think thereā€™s a strong case for contest this time.

Chatting on @StephenNolan on Monday, @JonTonge and I agreed that the UUP might benefit from a leadership contest. It hasnā€™t had one since 2012.
