Only issue I have with him is his comfortability in possession.
His lack of ball manipulation ability means he can be pressed into mistakes.
This will come with time though… defensively he’s colossal.

RT by @LilywhiteLab: My type of CB this lad. 18 years old, Christ.
Physically he’s exceptional, imposes himself well in duels whether it be in the high in the channels or low in the block. Old-school ‘clear your lines’ defender, sweeps up loose balls and wins a large % of his duels (ground & aerials).
Being trusted to play RCB in a 3 in the Championship says enough about his ability to defend the high/wide spaces and as we know for an Ange team in their 2-3 build-up this is Criteria 1 when scouting a CB for his teams. Can see why he’s picked up Van Dijk comparisons because their similar physical profile and the way he defends space rather than the man.
And whilst he has the athleticism to defend the channels to this level his anticipation, box defending and intelligence in lower defensive scenarios is well beyond his years. Partner that defensive sharpness with his freakishly long legs and 6’4ft stature and you’ve got a WC CB prospect.
I would say, his ball-playing needs work especially against a higher press/finding the first line-breaker but he has pretty fast manipulation of the ball in tighter spaces and has a good enough eye to pick a pass out, especially at range but this will only improve as he develops and there’s no better place to do it than the Championship.
TOP prospect.

R to @LilywhiteLab: Finally, on the day of the year where we celebrate our love for others, here’s an ode to Pape Matar Sarr.
The Senegalese international signed a 6-year contract with the club in January. A deserved reward for the midfielder and a smart investment from the club.
His FBRef chart sums this up beautifully; it’s basically all green!
Versatile is an understatement for this talented youngster. He’s key in build-up, often drifting into the vacant wide spaces to receive the ball. He’s fantastic at retaining the ball as Spurs look to move the opposition around. He’s great at breaking forwards from centre midfield, as shown by his perfectly timed run in behind for his goal vs Brighton. Without the ball, he’s an intelligent presser who never seems to stop running.
Some credit must go to Ange for putting trust in a young, inexperienced player. Ange isn’t one for sympathy minutes though, Sarr’s performances on the training ground would have made it the logical choice rather than giving a youngster a chance.
At 21 years old, Sarr has the potential to be one of the world’s best midfielders. There are parts of his game he needs to refine, but he’s in a great environment to both learn and perform to a high level.

R to @LilywhiteLab: Our next discussion point is our full-backs, who have deservedly got a lot of praise this season. But should we start to rest them?
This is more of a discussion point around Porro, who has dropped below his exceptionally high standards set early in the season in recent weeks.
He has played 96% of minutes available this season, somehow not succumbing to the plague of injuries Spurs suffered before Christmas.
The purpose of having a squad is to allow rotation and I believe Spurs can be better at being more proactive by resting players, rather than reactive and having to replace them when injured.
Emerson Royal is a good defender and although he may lack the creativity the Spanish international has, Spurs now have James Maddison back who provides plenty of that.
The Wolves match feels like a better time than ever to rest Porro, with the rest of the back line all fit. With Wolves’s preference to attack out wide and Porro’s flaws when defending the back post from crosses (which will be from the formidable Pedro Neto), it could be a switch which has tactical advantages.
Rotation not only helps prevent fatigue, but also gives opportunity to squad players and creates healthy competition for places.
In future weeks, we should look to rest Udogie too who has played pretty much every minute he’s been available for since signing. Only suspension has kept him out and although he is not at the same level, Ben Davies is a competent back up.
Short-term pain through resting players for long-term gain to keep them fit for some challenging fixtures to come.
A priority for Spurs in the summer should be a player who can cover both sides to a high level and challenge for these roles rather than just cover. Frustratingly, Spurs had this exact player in Kyle Walker-Peters. Let’s hope Levy was smart enough to insert a buyback clause.

R to @LilywhiteLab: One final note before we move on to the next topic. We have an extremely special player in Rodrigo Bentancur. Although not perfect, what he has done since returning from such a serious injury is beyond expectations. The club should look to manage his minutes and fans should be patient with him.
It’s not just us who think he is a world-class talent, these words from Marcelo Bielsa sum up what makes him so great after his first 90mins back from injury vs Bolivia.
“He is a player that it is difficult to find an area of the midfield that he is not in a position to assume.
There are not many players who defend like a holding midfielder, who attack and defend like an interior, like a number eight, like a mixed midfielder, and that when they reach the rival area he has the resources, the qualities of an offensive midfielder.
It is a very special case within football in general. A player who in himself meets the conditions for all places on the field. Today he stood out clearly.”

R to @LilywhiteLab: The video below from our own @Kish_P14 summarises what Bissouma offers perfectly. With all this information combined, I’ve come to the ideal solution for Spurs in the 6 position.
Against high-pressing teams, play Bissouma to use quick short passes to manipulate the opposition. (Brighton, Man City, Liverpool etc.)
Against low-block teams, play Bentancur to add additional creativity in the first line of build-up. (West Ham, Crystal Palace etc.)
Additionally, although Ange is a self-confessed ‘scoreboard-phobe’, he should consider using the strengths of each of these two players in certain game states.
When leading, Bissouma will help us retain possession and is better with his defensive positioning so will be key in getting over the line. When chasing a late winner, Bentancur’s higher risk approach to the role will be more appropriate.

R to @LilywhiteLab: If you ask Postecoglu this question he’ll tell you that we don’t play with 6’s and 8’s, but a simple look at how Spurs build-up shows that generally, one of the midfield 3 will show for the short pass from the Centre-Backs in build-up and will be less likely than his other midfielders to break forwards.
In recent weeks, this has been Bentancur. The Brighton game perfectly encapsulated the risk and reward of playing him in this role.
Brighton’s goal came from Bentancur being pressed and losing the ball on the edge of his own box, which put Spurs on the back foot and led to the penalty we conceded.
However, the build-up to Sarr’s equaliser came from some unbelievable close control, as he twisted and turned his way out of a tight situation to play the ball wide to Kulusevski. Within a couple of passes, we cut through Brighton and scored.
Where he is a player who has played a lot of his career further forwards, there are pros and cons to using him in a deeper role. Higher up the pitch, he is used to operating with minimal time and space to break lines, making this task easier in deeper positions when typically under less opposition pressure. Attack-minded players in deeper positions can be a huge asset, think Trent at Liverpool. Their vision and ability on the ball with more time allowed can cut through entire teams.
However, forward players usually play the game with more risk as there is less consequence to losing the ball in their normal role. This showed on Saturday for the goal, and has been a theme in recent weeks.
Although he wasn’t ready to start on Saturday, the return of Yves Bissouma will provide Ange with a choice ahead of the next match, and I think it’s a simple one.

R to @LilywhiteLab: Spurs’ dramatic win has put them in pole position for the final Top 4 spot. The most optimistic of fans will say it keeps us in the title race, but if that is to be the case there are some key areas Spurs need to fix.
The greatest challenge is how we control games. We often snatch a result from the jaws of defeat (Sheffield United, Manchester City, Brighton, Liverpool) but have equally been poor at allowing the opposition to get a result late in the game (Everton, Wolves, Manchester City) or come extremely close to by allowing late chances (Brentford, Palace, Burnley).
An element of this is down to the approach of Angeball, where there is a preference to seal a victory when one goal ahead by scoring again rather than conserving the lead they have. There is something else though that relates to our usage of one of our most talented players, Rodrigo Bentancur.
Prior to his ACL injury last season, the Uruguayan was becoming Spurs’ most important player aside from Kane. Performances on his return have been generally positive, but he would admit himself he’s not reached the heights of his early Spurs career under Ange just yet. This is understandable and he should be eased back in, but in what role?

R to @LilywhiteLab: The final priority involves emulating one of the Premier League’s in-form sides who are currently scoring for fun, Luton Town.
The focus will be on emulating their out of possession approach, because copying their in possession approach would likely lead to Ange walking at half-time as it strays far from his belief in how the game should be played.
Luton’s 4-0 win against Brighton shows how you can play them if you’re prepared to play at a high intensity without the ball, something Spurs do well anyway.
Intensity is essential but the pressing setup they used was incredibly well structured. A narrow 4141 shape was used early in the game with Adebayo applying the initial pressure in a way that initially looks reckless considering Brighton’s preference to play centrally into their central midfielders. As good as Brighton are in this area, encouraging them to play here makes their other main route to playing out (direct into or beyond the wingers) no longer an option.
This allows Luton to play narrower. A free passing lane from centre back into the winger isn’t an issue if the centre back isn’t on the ball.
Even in this approach where Luton have encouraged them to play centrally, they manage to bypass the first line of pressure with quick combinations, as they so often do. However, the deepest midfielder and an aggressive centre back are sharp to this. They ensure that neither of Brighton’s forwards can get on the turn to play forwards, whilst the central midfielders and wide players block off any bounce passes backwards. A loose touch is anticipated by Burke, which sets off a counter attack in the early seconds of the game. Luton score from this, and not long after they’re 2-0 up in 3 mins.
To counter Brighton’s initial setup and preference to play centrally, Spurs should do the following:
- Wingers narrower than normal when pressing
- Striker adjusts body shape to encourage central play
- Our Central Midfielders aggressive in press on their pivot players
- Romero to man mark a forward, our 6 man marking another
Bissouma would be perfect for this game, but only at full fitness. Bentancur and Sarr are both great pressers too and are more likely to star, whilst Maddison will be in turning this high pressure into shots on goal.

R to @LilywhiteLab: This leads nicely into Ange’s second priority, scoring early. Managing the tactical tweaks that Brighton make is far easier to do when a goal ahead, and the seagulls have an issue in conceding early goals this season.
A remarkable stat shows how this affects them on their travels; across the nine away league games since beating Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford in mid-September, Brighton have conceded the first goal within 17 minutes of kick-off in six of those matches and have been 2-0 behind only 21 minutes into four of them.
Brighton’s setup relies heavily on individuals controlling and winning 1v1 situations, with or without the ball. There’s trust that the players will pass to near perfection in build-up and the patterns of play are so well rehearsed they should always work. Unfortunately for De Zerbi, football is played by humans and for numerous reasons, they sometimes underperform. Unlike teams like Arsenal and Man City who have setups less reliant on individuals and better protection for players who lose the ball (plus elite defensive midfielders), Brighton use their players to commit more to the attack.
This works to devastating effect when successful leading to emphatic victories, such as their win over Tottenham in December. When they lose though, they often lose bad.
This is amplified away from home where the pressure from opposition fans and players in the early part of the game is often higher. Some players thrive in this environment, evidently a few in the Brighton ranks prefer home comforts.
If Spurs are to win, it will likely be based on the scoreline being in our favour after 20 minutes.

R to @LilywhiteLab: As mentioned earlier in the thread, Brighton are great at adapting to different pressing structures and build up strategies in game. Their principles remain the same but they are able to attack and defend against multiple approaches now.
Spurs have shown less flexibility this season, with the belief in the system akin to a religion. At times though, Ange and the players have made tweaks to get the result. At Crystal Palace (A) they showed greater restraint and control to bait a press against a low block. On occasions too we’ve seen the 6 drop in as an extra centre back to assist build up.
For all the pre-game analysis we do, a lot of it will hold less meaning once the first goal is scored. Adjustments and tweaks will be made by our opposition, it is crucial that we are both prepared for it and react to it.

R to @LilywhiteLab: Team News:
December’s encounter saw both teams play without many of their strongest players, this won’t be the case on Saturday.
Mitoma and Son have both returned from Asia Cup duties, Ansu Fati and Giovanni Lo Celso both look to have recovered from injuries and should make the bench.
Such was Brighton’s dominance against Crystal Palace, they will be unlikely to make many changes from their 4-1 derby win.
For Spurs, Ange will be enjoying the plethora of options he now has in attacking positions. Son will likely feature but only the club know if he’s ready physically or mentally to start. Kulusevski’s ability to receive to feet in tight spaces vs Johnson’s pace in behind is a trade-off the manager will have to decide on; if I was in his shoes I’d play the Swede from the start, largely because his intensity without the ball.

R to @LilywhiteLab: Their ability to adapt without the ball played a huge part in Albion’s dominant performance in the reverse fixture.
A 442 Diamond structure with forwards happy to press wide meant Spurs couldn’t play directly into the feet of their wingers as they often do. They were forced to play centrally, where Brighton looked to congest the midfield to create counter-attacks.
This was even more of an issue for Spurs away from home as they were without their two first choice centre backs. Having Romero available this time means that Spurs will likely play through this kind of setup at times if used again. If this does happen, Brighton will no doubt have another plan in place.

R to @LilywhiteLab: Their greatest strength now isn’t swearing by a new system. It’s their versatility to switch between their two setups. They can change in game and adapt to whatever works best, thanks to elite coaching and some talented versatile players.
An additional player in the first line of buildup allows more time on the ball and more control of the game. An additional player in the second line of buildup allows more options for vertical progression which will create more attacks, but at a higher risk.
In the reverse fixture a 3-1 setup was used at times to allow more players in the forward line to overload the Spurs defence. They raced into a 4-0 lead so it worked.
Just as teams started to figure out how to stop the Seagulls, De Zerbi started to reinvent the wheel.

R to @LilywhiteLab: The key difference is their shape in build-up and in turn, their shape when they lose the ball. This can’t be evidenced better than the 2 pictures below.
In their opening game of the season against Brighton, their often use 2-3 structure was used. This provides multiple options to combine centrally to play through the midfield, however was an issue when they lost the ball.
Neither Dunk or Van Hecke, for all their on the ball abilities, are the fastest players and don’t thrive in 1v1 matchups vs fast wingers. Teams such as West Ham and Aston Villa found ways to exploit this, using their fast wingers and forwards to attack the vacant space quickly once they win the ball.
3 months later against Fulham, they have started to use a 3-2 shape. This means one less player in midfield to combine and create, but extra security and passing angles in the first line of build up. More importantly, it covers a greater width of the pitch making it tougher for opposition teams to break through them.
Brighton only conceded one counter-attack that ended in a shot across their three games against Fulham, Everton and Sheffield United, in comparison to four against West Ham alone earlier in the season.

Spurs leapfrogged them recently and currently are on a run of scoring in 35 consecutive games. A 36th would take them join second in the all time list.

Genuinely one of the best human’s the club has ever employed.
Only takes a bit of research.
Now backing it on the pitch, couldn’t ask for a better player for us to have represent us.

RT by @LilywhiteLab: Really big fan of this guy. It’s strange that his name isn’t mentioned often alongside our other youth prospects because he is definitely one of the gems of our academy.
LL quite rightly profile him as an 8 but I could see a future for him as a 6 with his superb press resistance

I know he’s been playing further forward in recent times…
But I’ve always seen him as a deep lying playmaker due to his insane passing ability and range 🎯
If we’re seeing him as a potential 6 alternative I’m all for this, because he is a nice contrast to Bissouma who’s more of a press evader.
Could be a brilliant 6 for us against lower opposition where we need to move their block from side to side to find gaps ↔️

Tyrese Hall absolutely ran the game last night in our 18’s FA Youth Cup win.
He’s so smooth in all his on ball actions. Strokes passes beautifully and then is able to ghost past pressures too effortlessly.
Also a demon out of possession.
What a talent 💫

Complete the trio 3️⃣🇸🇪
Bardghji is exactly the type of profile I’d look for on the right with a more marquee signing on the left.

Bergvallは#8、#6 に将来的になる可能性はあるがまだ早い、狭いスペースを打開してくれる、シュート性能とロングパス精度には疑問が残る、などなど

R to @LilywhiteLab: Adding such an exciting talent to an already strong midfield cohort is wonderfully encouraging business from the club and hopefully we continue to equip Ange with the tools to turn us into a powerhouse!

R to @LilywhiteLab: Bergvall’s technical supremacy and deceptive body movement makes him a midfielder who is always capable of changing the picture of the play, no matter where he receives the ball, but his temperament and physicality will allow him to also succeed in a deeper midfield role down the line.

R to @LilywhiteLab: In the short-term I believe he is ready for first team minutes next season, ideally supplementing our first choice #8s in Maddison and Sarr. Although he may be an option for the #6 in the future, for now we shouldn’t look to bed him in with a role that inherently has so much responsibility.

R to @LilywhiteLab: Lucas is not rapid but is a fairly powerful runner which allows him to carry into large spaces, a nice asset coupled with his tight space ability, as well as be an asset in defensive transition with his recovery runs.

R to @LilywhiteLab: Perhaps the most common questions surrounding such young signings tend to be regarding the player’s physical readiness, but watching him reveals it to be no surprise that he’s amassed so much senior minutes despite his youth.
