I was getting ready to mow the lawn when I noticed a Monarch butterfly sipping nectar from a Rose of Sharon bush. I ran back in to grab my camera and took a few a shots before the butterfly left to visit other flowers. Such a treat to see these beauties.

A juvenile Virginia Rail stretches a wing. This bird is not flight ready yet; you can see a few of the feathers are still in their keratin sheath (those straw looking structures), which protects new feathers while they develop.

A Sandhill Crane colt stretches his/her wings before running and flapping down the path, managing to get a couple of feet off the ground. One of the Sandhill Crane parents ran after the colt, who had stopped just around the bend.

A large majority of Red-tailed Hawks don't start to get their red tail feathers until their second summer, a little after their first year. In some rare cases, a Red-tailed Hawk will molt into their adult plumage earlier.

A Barn Swallow perches on the floor boards of the boardwalk, standing above or very near his/her nest built under the boardwalk. I couldn't see the nest, but I could hear the nestlings chirping when the adults flew by.

A Red-headed Woodpecker enjoying some sunbathing. This is done by many species of birds to help rid themselves of feather parasites. The sunlight will heat up the feathers to temperatures where it's difficult for the lice to survive.

Green Herons have a high zoop factor - going from no neck to very long neck - and so do Least Bitterns. Least Bitterns will sometimes sway their comically long neck, mimicking a reed as so to blend in with the environment.

I don't often get to see a Virginia Rail in flight; in fact I'm happy when I get to see one at all. This secretive marsh bird took a short flight from a patch of cattails to land on a lily pad root.
