People already said almost everything wrt boss design but I think something worth noting here is that a lot of "lukewarm takes" people have actually have insanely radical design implications, they feel lukewarm to ppl because they're mainstream industry…

The console vs arcade shmup distinction doesnt disappear just cuz almost all shmups are console shmups now. Its now simply spiritual instead of physical 🙏

I think a fruitful thing for arcade designers to think about is how to make games enjoyable & clear to new players even if they only have 1 very hard difficulty mode, have no extra modes & force 1cc's. That's some good ass core design stuff
